Off I went bright and early after having to fast all night for the dreaded Glucose Tolerance Test. As I mentioned in my earlier post, this is a 2 hour test which involves a urine sample, another “yummy” glucose drink, no food or drink during the test (or before), 3 blood tests (one when I arrive, another at the half way mark of 1 hour and then the third at the 2 hour mark) and I can’t be active so I have to sit for 2 hours.

Let’s just hope that after the torture of all that the results are much better and I don’t have to go to the next step! I really don’t like the idea of a daily finger prick test to check my glucose levels or of course having gestational diabetes!!! :(.

A big thanks to Nanny and Poppy for looking after Addi while I had the test done, I wouldn’t like to think about the alternative…entertaining Addison for 2 hours in the QML pathology center!

I got the dreaded phone call today with the bad news that I needed to take the Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) as I had high results for my glucose screening test yesterday. 2 hours of torture!

I told the receptionist that called me from Dr Bopp’s office that she could go “ring his neck” for me for making me do this. She then informed me that he was currently sick and she had been giving him a hard time…I think that being sick is his payback for putting me through this horrible test :). He’s just lucky he is a great doctor and a very nice guy!

The main problem is what to do with Addi!!! About the only person that could think to help me out (at 7.30am) was good ol’ Dad!! Poppy to the rescue!

Here we go again, it’s that time during the pregnancy (26 to 28 weeks) where we have to test to see if I have gestational diabetes. This is done by doing a glucose screening which basically means I go into a pathology center and drink a glucose drink and then 1 hour later I have a blood test to check to see how my body processes the glucose. If I have high results (that if you will remember I did for my first pregnancy with Addison) I will need to undergo the 2 hour Glucose Tolerance Test. It is not a very pleasant thing to have to do, however my main issue is what to do with Addison if I have to do this test!

Today I drove to Mum’s (Nanny’s) house and she came with me so that she could just watch Addi while I was having the blood test done. We went to go to the pathology collection center at the Hyperdome, but they had misplaced the key to the fridge where the drink was kept!!! So our plans went out the window and meant we had to drive to a medical center close by (thankfully) and have the test done there.

It was very frustrating as we had planned to go in, have the drink then walk around the shops for the hour and have the blood test which would have been very simple if we could have done the screening at the Hyperdome. But instead we had to get in the car, drive there and back to the Hyperdome and then drive back before the hour was up to have the blood test done.

Instead of stuffing Addi around mum just walked around the shops with him while I drove to QML and had the blood test done. What a drama!! Especially considering I had called them only 1 hour prior to check their hours etc and they knew I would be coming in! She some how got the idea in her head that I said I was coming Friday…all I can think is that she took me saying “I’m 27 weeks on Friday” as I was coming then. Oh well, now we just have to hope I don’t have to do the second test! If I do I will be doing it at my regular QML pathology as I ended up with a huge bruise on my arm as she struggled to take my blood! Did I mention…What a DRAMA!!!

I feel like I have been so very slack with the updates during this pregnancy. I guess that is mainly because I have Addison which takes my mind off the fact that I’m even pregnant! I’m so busy with our every day life and looking after Addi that I barely have time to even think about being pregnant. It certainly is different the second time around.

I remember when I was pregnant with Addison it was all new and exciting, not a day would go by when you didn’t think about that baby’s arrival and all the anticipation that went with having a baby. Your first pregnancy you have no idea what to expect for any part of it. The pregnancy itself, the labour and then of course the actually having a little person in your life to look after.

I’ve spoken to many people expecting their second baby and they feel exactly the same. “People will ask how far along I am and I have to stop and think. It reminds me that I’m actually pregnant.” Just one comment a lady made when I was speaking to her about being pregnant again. I totally agree.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that it isn’t exciting to be pregnant again and to know that a baby is coming into our lives very soon. It’s just that we have been there done that and know what to expect from being pregnant. Having said that no two pregnancies are the same, just like no two babies are the same. It will be very interesting to see what our baby squiggle is like and all the differences between our two boys.

I’ve said it from the start, this pregnancy really is very different to my first. And things seem to happen a lot sooner than in your first. The first movements, your tummy “showing” but also some of the bad things such as the back pain.

During my pregnancy with Addison I suffered from back pain from around the 30 week mark, but I’m bigger a lot sooner this time and I guess that explains the back troubles I’m already facing. I also don’t get all that much time to rest, Addi wouldn’t allow for it, so it is only to be expected.

As I said at the beginning of the post, I feel quite slack as I haven’t been doing many updates with my second pregnancy. I guess that is mainly because everything that is happening with my pregnancy at this stage I experienced with my first. It wasn’t like early on when I was sick and things were different.

I was determined to be better at keeping a record this time around, but I have to say I’m much, much worse! I wanted to measure my tummy, take weekly photos and record my weight increase…but I just don’t seem to have the time. It seems silly really. Taking a photo only takes a few minutes, and likewise with the other records…I just don’t seem to have a few minutes spare.

Today we had another appointment with our OB Dr Bopp for our baby Squiggle. We got to see him/her briefly (we wanted to make sure we didn’t accidentally see the gender, even though it is probably too early to see on the doctors ultrasound) and checked my blood pressure. All is progressing well. Squiggle had a strong heart beat and my blood pressure was perfect. Our next appointment will be after our appointment for the ultrasound.

We plan to find out the gender but it will be kept a surprise for Mummy as we are going to have a gender reveal party with our closest friends and family the following weekend. I don’t know how I’m going to manage a whole extra week not finding out but I’m so excited to have a huge surprise and see if we are expecting a boy or a girl!!!!

We were supposed to see the midwife again today (this is the third appointment we made with her) and yet again she was away sick. This time we are not rescheduling as it is just a formality and she really can’t tell us anything we don’t already know. The hospital has been booked and the paper work done, so all we need to do now is wait.

Basically the test is 1 hour long where you have to drink a sugary drink that they give you and for the next hour you are not to have any other food or drink. They then do a blood test and send that away for the results.

The test is generally done in your second trimester and is recommended to be taken between 26 and 28 weeks pregnant. I’ve done mine this week at 27 weeks of pregnancy and I will be going to the obstetrician next week to get my results. Fingers crossed everything is fine and I get good test results.

It seems like time is just flying by, I guess that’s because I’ve been keeping very busy so all the weeks are going so fast! I’m also feeling a lot more prepared after last week, I think mainly because we have picked up some of the larger items for Addison such as his pram and car-seat.

I will be so happy when I can finally get stuck into setting up his room! It seems I might have to wait another week or so for this as the new carpet isn’t expected to be installed until next week now :(. This is a shame but there isn’t much we can do about it, so I just have to live with furniture all over the house and in the hallways for another week.

Over the last couple of weeks and even now as I write this I have been feeling a little bit sick and faint each morning. It is quite odd as it is always about an hour or two after I’ve eaten, I could understand if I hadn’t had any food but I have. I generally start to feel much better after laying down on my side for a little while.

Funny enough Addison likes to jump around like a cheeky little monkey every time I’m not feeling well, which as you can imagine doesn’t help to make me feel better all that quickly.

You may also notice that over the last day or two I have managed to catch up with the My First Baby Pregnancy Guide to the same stage as my own pregnancy. For more information on the week by week changes to you and your baby for 26 weeks of pregnancy take a look at the most recent article added to the guide.

I had another doctors visit today to check on Addi’s progress and mine of course. My blood pressure has been perfect for the entire pregnancy which is great news, yet again today it was the same as it has been for all my previous visits.

My ob had a look at Addi and said that he was positioned perfectly and everything was looking good. For the first time Dr Bopp measured the fundal height, for more information on this have a look at the My First Baby Pregnancy Guide article for Week 20 of Pregnancy. Apparently my pregnancy was progressing well according to this measurement.

The doctor asked about my size when I was born as the size of your baby is based more on mum. This is great news for me as I was an average size baby where Charles was quite big!

Between 26 weeks and 28 weeks of pregnancy before my next doctors appointment I have to go have a blood test to check for the possibility of Addi having gestational diabetes. It involves having a sugary drink and then testing me for it’s affects. I believe it is referred to as the glucose tolerance test, my doctor has requested a full blood count, blood group antibodies test and 50gm glucose screen. I plan to have the tests on Thursday 29th July when I will be 27 weeks pregnant, then I go back to see him the following Thursday with the results.

From 28 weeks (so after my next appointment) my doctor is going to be seeing me every 2 weeks instead of every month. Things will start to get very exciting from then as this means we are getting closer and have entered the third trimester!!!

Today I am 25 weeks pregnant and still very busy working on everything for the baby shower. The back pain that I had been having seems to be getting a bit better however each morning I have noticed that I am feeling sick and a little faint.

Travelling in the car as a passenger also seems to be affecting me, which makes me concerned for our flight to Cairns next month. If I’m not feeling so good in the car then I’m not sure how I’m going to cope on a plane. I’ve never been car or plane sick so I never gave it much thought. But I’m hoping that drinking plenty of water and trying to keep myself a little distracted will help. Fingers crossed!!
