Since Addison still needs someone to sleep with him we decided to look into bunk beds that would accommodate all our needs. The idea of having a double down the bottom and a single up the top seemed like the perfect idea for the room. Plenty of sleeping room but not taking up lots of space. Bunk beds may also be very handy in the future with the boys (Addi and Pressie) eventually ending up sharing the same room.

After finding the perfect bed, we made space and set it up. We also found some wonderful sheet and quilt cover sets (matching but not the same) for both the top and bottom bunks. I wanted to cover the old spare rooms European cushions and scatters to match, so I sort out some fabric from spotlight to sew some.

Other bits and pieces that I will add to the room will be shelves for his lego, some lego heads for storage of pieces (4 to be exact!), book racks (made from spice racks at Ikea) for his favourite books, Addison’s toys and books would also be moved down (his train table, black board, hot wheels cars & track – freeing up space upstairs and in Preston’s room). I found a great canopy at Ikea, which I had intended to put above the bed, but after getting bunks this wasn’t going to happen. We decided to put it above his train table instead. It’s all slowly coming together. I will be making some name art canvases for his room also.

I’ve been busy making things, searching for wonderful second hand bargains and making sure I have everything to make it just right for him. I’ve received beautiful gifts from family and friends at the baby shower that make his room even more special.

From the essentials to special little things just for my baby boy, his room has really come together, and I’m so proud to be able to give you a tour around via the following photo gallery. Enjoy!

I thought I should point out that nearly all the toys in Addison’s room were actually mine from when I was a kid, likewise the blankets and even some of the clothes are hand me downs. I have bought the majority of furniture second hand (the only new item would be the bookcase/toy box). Addison’s clothes are a majority of gifts or second hand. Toys and decorations have been made by me. We were very lucky finding items on eBay and doing a lot ourselves.

You will see there are a couple of things that I have made that I haven’t actually posted about yet, that’s because I did them before I even started this website (the flags on the wall and the owl & tree canvas decorations). I will eventually post about these separately.

You might actually be wondering what on earth the little table next to the cot is for… it’s actually to put the baby monitor on. But as you mostly know, Addison will be sleeping upstairs for the first 6 months and therefore it has been set up in his Matilda Rocker for the meantime.

Addison's Name Labels on his Little Golden Books

I really need to come up with a way to sort the books so I can find the one to read very easily. Something to think about over the next couple of weeks. I’m thinking of typing up a list of all the titles but still need some way to find them on the shelf. Plus eventually I’ll add to his collection with new books and will need to know what he already has so I don’t double up.

The box mostly contains Little Golden Books that once belong to my older cousins on mum’s side of the family. They grew up with my mum in her house as a child, with my nan and par (mum’s parents) raising them. The books were actually second hand at that point as well, so Addison will be the fourth (that I know of) owner.

They are not all in the best condition and some of the books have scribble in them, but I have done my best to clean them up. I’ve also used white out where the names of the owners were written in the front of the books.

To make them look a little nicer I have designed and bought some name labels via Vistaprint. They should arrive in a few weeks time. I think they are very cute, and match the theme for Addison’s room: Birdies, Owls and Nature.

They give a very professional finish and come in a range of varieties, not just for baby and kids bedrooms but also for use throughout the house with plenty of decorative stickers. Not only do they look great but you can put them up however you like as each part is individually cut, but they can be easily removed when you grow tired of them or want a change.

In this case they are perfect for a child’s room, as they can be changed as he gets older and has different interests. Sure enough Addison will have many ideas on how he wants his room to look when he gets older. This way we are not up for a lot of money to change it to how he likes… or repaint walls for that matter! I can tell you it wasn’t an easy job to paint over the Sesame Street Characters that once occupied these walls!!

One thing that I have refused to do is change the wall colours in this room to suit your typical nursery or baby’s room look of either blue or pink decor! I wanted it to remain in the same colour theme as the rest of the house. But just because I have done this, doesn’t mean that the room can’t be fun and look like a beautiful nursery! These decals have certainly worked a treat for making the neutral room, which was once a study, come to life.

Being cat owners we really wanted to introduce cats to Addi’s bedroom and thought that this small wall space right next to the door was the puuuurfect spot for this set of decals.

The second wall decal that we put up was this tree and children swinging, also featuring birds:

 This decal set fits really well with our nature and birdie theme and has a real playful spirit about it. I’m sure you will agree that these wall decals really do add something special to the bedroom.

We got there eventually and today I finished putting all his toys on the shelves and in the toy box.

I’m really happy with it, it does the trick and has all the storage we needed for Addison’s huge collection of stuffed toys.

Our carpet is on order, so I don’t know when we will be getting it installed yet but here is the before shot of Addi’s room.

You can see there are lots of marks and stains on the existing carpet, this was actually from the previous owners in their child’s bedroom. Since this is going to be a baby’s/child’s room I have selected a solution dyed nylon carpet on an 11mm underlay. This way it will still be very soft and great to play and walk on but fantastic for cleaning up after little accidents.

I’ve selected a colour that is slightly darker than the existing carpet but not too dark that all of our cat Fuzzie’s fur will show up on very easily. It matches the walls and feature wall in the bedrooms perfectly. I can’t wait to have it put in as once the carpet is installed I can set up Addi’s room properly!!!

Our hallway is full of furniture at the moment from both the downstairs rooms. Unfortunately the cot had to be dismantled as it would not fit through the door. Now I just have to wait for the call to organise installation, really looking forward to showing you all the finished rooms!!
