Finally Addi seems to be eating regularly again!! After so much struggle and him completely refusing to eat for me, for the last couple of days he has had breakfast, lunch and dinner + desert without fail!
I’m not quite sure if it was anything that I did, or he just realised that he did want to eat…I have no idea! But he is eating!! It did occur to me though that because Addison is a demand fed baby that it might just be that I’m not offering the solids when Addi wants the solids.
So now I do what I call the “spoon test” each time I think that Addi might be hungry. Basically I offer him a spoon (with nothing on it) and see if he opens his mouth and lets me put it in, I do this a couple of times and if he does this I then get food for him. Most of the time he then eats without question, but sometimes I do have to smear some on his lips to let him taste what I’m giving him and then he eats off the spoon with no worries at all. If he refuses the spoon test by either flapping his arms or turning his head and getting upset with me then I don’t give him solids.
If he is still cranky and doesn’t want the spoon (solids) I offer him the breast and figure he must have just wanted a drink. Eventually I will get him into a pattern with his solids (and actually it already is at the correct times of day, except maybe lunch time…but we are still working on lunch). I’m just happy that he is eating and getting his breakfast and dinner.
I’m also making sure that I offer him the breast milk after his solids so he doesn’t think that he is going to miss out on that if he has his food. We also give him a little drink of water at meal times from a sipper cup to get him used to using a cup. He’s pretty funny with it, knows how it works but sucks on it like he would if he was breast feeding and then tends to get too much water and lets it dribble down his chin. We have to prepare for him to get a bit wet when we do, but boy is it cute to see him drink from a cup!
